Organic TV screens (OLED) Coming to a Mobile Phone Near You
Organic TV may be a few years away from making it into your living room, but the ultra thin screens are being put to use more rapidly in another device - mobile phones. One of the advantages of OLED screens is their power saving qualities versus traditional LCD screens.
Last week, Samsung showed off a OLED screen in a cell phone. Though OLED had seemed inpractical for small screen sizes because it was believed the lifespan would be cut short on smaller screens, Samsung has found a way around that with its PenTile technology which takes full advantage of the science of our eyes and delivers the same quality picture using fewer subpixels. The new technology should allow the OLED phone displays to last 5000 hours or so. Phones using Organic TV techonology may begin appearing in late 2009.
As OLED technology advances, we are sure to see broader adoption of the space saving, and energy saving, technology.

Samsung Says Organic TV Years Away
Despite showing off a 40 inch Organic TV over a year ago, Samsung does not believe OLED Tv will be mainstream for a number of years.
According to Sang Heung Shin, vice president of Flat Panel Development it will be: "at least four to five years before we see OLED in the marketplace."
Sony has also showed off working prototype Orgainic Tvs over the last year.
Though it took several years, no one will forget how quickly flat-screen LCDs took over the market. Maybe one day the same will happen for organic television (OLED).

This is the world's first flat panel television that uses OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology to deliver the brightest, most vivid picture available. OLED pixels express true-to-life color because electric currents selectively stimulate relevant pixel patterns, producing highly saturated individual colors that combine to form a broad color spectrum similar to the natural world's.But be aware, this 10in x 11.25 in OLED TV by Sony is priced at a lofty $2,500. Though OLED have many advantages vs. LCD and Plasma TVs, the initial price tag is sure to limit is widespread adoption until prices come down signficantly.
To render black colors, pixels "turn off," resulting in complete darkness and, combined with the enhanced purity of the primary color matrix (red, green, and blue), produces a contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1--the highest available and 100 times greater than the industry average. While typical LCDs have a response time between 4 and 8 milliseconds, this superior unit redraws pictures in less than 0.01 milliseconds for rapid, seamless reproduction of fast moving images. OLED displays are produced not by the bulky, inefficient backlighting found in LCD or plasma televisions, but by carbon-based materials deposited on film that shine brilliantly when an electric current passes through them. This technology allows the screen to be be 1/8" thick--about the thickness of two pennies. With an 11" screen, ATSC digital tuner, two HDMI inputs, and Dolby digital sound. Accommodates signals up to 1080p. 10" H x 11 1/4" W x 5 1/2" D. (4 1/4 lbs.)

Organic TV - Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED)
An organic light emitting diode is any light emitting diode (LED) whose emmisive ellectrolumenescent layer is composed of organic compounds. The layer typically. contains a polymer substance that allows suitable organic compounds to be deposited. They are deposited in rows and columns onto a flat carrier by a simple "printing" process. The resulting matrix of pixels can emit light of different colors.
A major advantage of OLEDs vs. typical LED screens is they do not require backlighting.
